NEA Task 6 : Understanding Audience (Mass Market)

1.       What is a mass market audience?

 A mass market audience is a large group of consumers who share common preferences for a specific service/product.

2.       What is an independent cinema?

 An independent cinema is a cinema that is not owned/operated by a large film studio such as Odeon or Cineworld.

3.       What is OnScreen magazine?

 UK-based film magazine that covers a wide range of topics, specifically on recent/upcoming movies, and it is popular among people who are passionate about film or work within the industry. The magazine features reviews of new films, interviews with actors and even directors, and it also features articles on topics such as film history, production, and distribution. It is published on a monthly basis and is available both on print as well as on the OnScreen website to be viewed for free. 

4.       What different sections are there on the OnScreen website and how do these sections appeal to a mass market audience?

 Some of the hyperlinks that are on the website are: Features, News, Reviews, Trailer, Movies, Win, Cinema pass. The 'movie' section appeals to the mass audience as they can easily go and view movies that are upcoming and even movies that are still currently playing, allowing them to find exactly what they are looking for very quickly. The "Reviews" is perfect for those who are passionate about film, as it let's them read and also find out if it's worth going to watch a movie before they commit to paying for it.

5.       How does the latest edition of OnScreen magazine (May/June 2023) appeal to a mass market audience?

 The cover appeals to a mass market audience by featuring a popular, and a very anticipated, upcoming movie "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" on the front cover. This quickly shows the audience what the magazine is going to be about, thus attracting their target audience straight away. The cover also features a content plug at the bottom to show what will be in the inside magazine as well to further entice the audience by showing them they cover more than one movie.

6.       What is meant by the term cross-media convergence?

 Cross-media convergence refers to merging multiple types of media together.

7.       Is there any cross-media convergence* between the magazine and its website? 

OnScreen's example of cross-media convergence if their link to the website on their content page within the magazine as well as advertising the magazine on their website, on which it can be read digitally.
